This record, I am enjoying a lot right now…
Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone – is the most recent (Sept 2014) album from Lucinda Williams.
This is also the first release on her own Highway 20 record label – a 20-track, triple-vinyl album!
It has given her the freedom to record more extended songs and release a longer album.
She is happy and writing prolifically – and it shows. 18 of the tracks are her own compositions.
She says too, that she is pleased with using her (more mature) voice in more creative ways.
These days, it’s less country, more country-blues and soul. Back to her southern, Louisiana roots maybe.
This recording has big, open, rich sound. Lots of swampy, deep rhythmic grooves. Weighty kick drum and bass. Especially nice clear electric guitar tone (Greg Leisz, Stuart Mathis, Val McCallum and also featuring Tony Joe White).
Favourite tracks for me, at the moment – West Memphis – It’s Gonna Rain – Something Wicked This Way Comes.
Postscript – my copy (USA) benefitted from a record-clean – bringing out a little more high frequency tonal ‘shine’ and detail.
